A few weeks ago I received the Vega Recovery Accelerator from the cool team at Vega Sport to test it and review it. I have recently increased my mileage in running, I train clients and teach classes which can be pretty intense physically and I had been on the hunt for a formula that I can drink after my speedwork or temporuns that I like and that would let me recover optimally. The Vega Recovery Accelerator comes in two flavours, tropical and apple berry. I received tropical and have never tried the other one. I loved it. It reminds me of a recovery drink I used when I was still competing in Germany. Unfortunately I couldn't find the name but the taste was the same.

I have found that when I drink the formula right after an intense workout, I feel like I can forgo eating solid foods for a bit and still feel energized. The toughest workout I did in the past few weeks was 12 miles broken up into 5 miles at a casual pace for the first mile then some fartlek, followed by 5 times 400m on the track with an active break of 200m running, followed by 5 miles easy pace home. That same day I had also taught a one hour cardio cross training class just before the run.
And the next day, I was fine. And I mean that: I had to run a 10 mile team run, then teach two back to back classes in the afternoon, all centered around leg strength, core and cardio elements. I didn't cramp up or otherwise feel fatigued. Not mentally either, which is something that can happen easily with the sheer quantity of training I do currently.
I waited to write this review until I had had a few of these scenarios and I found that if I drink the Vega Recovery Accelerator immediately post running then my other activities aren't too affected by it. That's important for me as I'm running the NYC Marathon this year and expect to increase my mileage over the new months. My job as a trainer can't be affected by that. I have to be able to go back out there and actually motivate others. That includes me being physically and mentally present and light on my feet.
- I like the taste.
- I don't feel muscle soreness the next day.
- I am motivated to go back out again immediately or the next day.
- I don't need solids right away and it's easy on my tummy.
- If I don't clean the bottle right away it gets very sticky.
- I find little black bits at the bottom of the bottle. Couldn't figure out what it was.
I think the price of $27 for 12 single packs is fair. Admit it, you pay more for your green juices and smoothies or lattes on a daily basis. Since this is a high intensity formula (at least that is how I use it), you may not need to use more than 2-3 per week.
